The officer in charge of a police station is called the Station Officer or Station House Officer. He or she is assisted by a number of Sub-Inspectors, Assistant Sub-Inspectors, Head-Constables and Constables. When an incident is reported, a Sub-Inspector is usually the first investigating officer and can file a charge sheet in court.

Vijaya Laxmi Devi was Odisha's first and India's third woman Sub-Inspector. She belonged to the Dhenkanal district and had joined the state police force in 1962. She did her graduation from the Ravenshaw University, Cuttack.
